Bone Grafting

What is bone grafting?

When losing your teeth, you also lose the bone structure that naturally supports them. This causes functional, as well as aesthetic problems within your mouth and facial structures. You don’t have to live with an unsatisfying smile. In fact, the risk or the possibility of bone deterioration may actually be the motivation that drives you to confront tooth loss and take the appropriate steps to resolve it. Our board-certified periodontist, Dr. Donald Steinberg, can increase bone volume so that restorative measures, like dental implants, can be placed, with aesthetics and function restored.

At our office in Bedford, TX, we can offer you a consultation and examination to see if you are a good candidate for bone grafting. Unlike most of our surgical procedures completed in-house, bone grafting is routinely performed in an operatory. We can offer options and combinations of grafting materials and methods to choose from for your bone graft. Alongside Dr. Steinberg and his team, you will determine which type of bone graft and material is right for you. Call today to schedule your consultation at DFW Implant Team.

When it comes to bone grafting for your bone atrophy, we are a medical team that can help you make dental decisions with compassion and care. We want to give you all of the information needed to make an informed decision in restoring your facial bone health. We promise to be there to help when it really matters, every step of the way. Please call us today for more information, or to schedule your first appointment with Dr. Steinberg at DFW Implant Team.

What are the benefits of bone grafting?

What could be the complications if the bone loss is not corrected? The teeth can shift, become nonaligned, loose, or potentially fall out. The patient could have a sunken facial structure, that could happen to one or both sides of the face, develop TMJ pain in the jaw, have headaches, facial pain, see a deeper wrinkling around the mouth, poor lip structural support, and could struggle with chewing or speaking.

How is a bone grafting procedure performed?

At DFW Implant Team, the patient will undergo conscious sedation anesthesia, Normally the bone is NOT taken from the patient, which avoids a second wound. Dr. Steinberg may use growth factors from the patient to enhance and speed healing when performing bone grafting. (See LPRF under Other Treatments) The end goal is always to achieve a stronger bone that provides strength and durability to support your smile.

How do I recover after a bone grafting procedure?

After a bone grafting procedure is performed, ice packs should be held on the face in order to reduce any swelling. Pain relievers or no antibacterial mouthwash may be recommended or prescribed as well. Typically after a bone grafting procedure, soft foods or a liquid diet is recommended for 1 - 2 days. If stitches were used at the incision site, Dr. Donald Steinberg will ask that you return to the office in 7 - 10 days in order to check your healing. The gums should be fully healed in about 3 months. No air travel for 10 - 14 days.
