Scaling and Root Planing

The initial stage of periodontal treatment is usually a thorough cleaning above and below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar (calculus). This procedure is called a scaling and root planing. Local anesthesia is normally used to numb the teeth and gums for these appointments. This procedure removes infection from under the gums and starts the healing process. In patients with mild periodontal disease, scaling and root planing may be the only treatment they need. In patients with more advanced disease, additional treatment is often necessary.
